Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of Ultramat, a snakes-and-ladders learning medium, in learning whole number operations in Grade III of UPTD SDN Pejagan 3, Bangkalan, and students' responses to it. The study is descriptive and does not test the effectiveness of the medium or its effect on learning outcomes. A descriptive qualitative approach was used. Data came from observation by one observer and a questionnaire (ten closed statements, five open-ended questions) completed by 28 students. Observation data and open-ended answers were analyzed qualitatively, and closed answers with simple descriptive statistics. The medium was used in a lesson based on the Numbered Heads Together (NHT) model with rotating roles in the game. All ten observed aspects were recorded as observed; students were enthusiastic, took turns in counting and performing roles, and collaborated. The questionnaire showed that all students understood the rules and 96.4% wanted to learn with Ultramat again. However, only 23 of 28 students (82.1%) discussed with friends when they had difficulty, the lowest positive response, which indicates that collaboration was not evenly distributed. The part students liked most was rolling the dice and moving the pawn, so engagement in the game needs to be distinguished from engagement in solving problems. Constraints were light noise, discipline, and limited playing time. The study describes how Ultramat can support student engagement in cooperative learning and the implementation challenges that require careful time and classroom management. The findings cannot show that students' computational ability improved.
