Abstract

Smoking behavior among women in Indonesia is a social phenomenon closely related to patriarchal culture and gender double standards within society. This study aims to examine society’s negative perceptions of female smokers, the factors influencing smoking behavior, and the social impacts experienced by women smokers. The Social Construction Theory proposed by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann is used to analyze the process through which negative views and stigma toward female smokers are socially formed. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method through in-depth interviews with three active female smokers from student backgrounds. The findings show that smoking behavior is influenced by internal factors, such as stress and emotional pressure caused by strict parenting, as well as external factors including peer influence and dependence on certain cigarette brands. In addition, society still associates women with moral values and politeness, causing female smokers to receive negative stigma, be labeled as “naughty” or “immoral,” and experience discriminatory social treatment.
